It goes without saying that a spiritual director needs to have their own spiritual director. However, it is also highly recommended that they benefit from supervision. This provides both support and guidance and guards against blind spots. This may be either group or individual supervision depending on circumstances. The very act of listening to another’s experiences of God may trigger within the director unintegrated fears or even countertransference reactions to the directee. A third person with the right skills can spot these traps and help the director to look at and to try to understand their reactions and behaviour in the ministry of spiritual direction.
