Ignatian Spirituality Course
The Ignatian Spirituality Course (ISC) is a 3 year course, held in the city of London. Its basis is the understanding of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius and the art of spiritual direction. The course meets one day a week during the academic year and the day is from 11.00 to 16.00. Ist year meets on a Tuesday; 2nd year on a Wednesday and 3rd year on a Thursday. There is also an annual lecture day, on a Saturday usually in May, when all participants are expected to attend and the day is open to previous participants. The topics for this day vary.
The 1st year is a general introduction to schools of Christian Spirituality and schools of prayer, a preview of the life of St Ignatius and the Spiritual Exercises and basic listening skills. The 2nd year studies, in depth, the text of the Spiritual Exercises and deepens the listening skills. The 3rd year looks at the practical application of the Spiritual Exercises and helps sharpen the individual’s listening skills. The course is mainly experiential and requires each participant to be reflecting on their own journey throughout the course. There are a number of assignments during the 3 years and these are aimed at helping the individual reflect on their own process or by recommended reading prepare for the next session.
To enable each one to be aware of their emerging skills there is a personal appraisal, with one of the tutors, at regular intervals during the course and this also helps each one continue their discernment of whether they are called to the ministry of spiritual direction.
